The legend says that in 1863 an Austrian baker bakes the first Bagel in order to thank King John III of Poland for his help in defeating the Otomane army. The baker would have given this bread the circular shape with a hole in the center that characterizes it to make it looks like the stirrups to mount a horse, in homage to the king's hobby. However it is more likely that the bagel was invented much earlier in the city of Krakow, Poland since the word bagel is mentioned in the Regulation of the city of Krakow in 1610. This regulation stated that a bagel should be given as a gift to pregnant woman.
